Penna,
LOOOOOVED!!! Fell like a sweet and mushy anime story! Will probably read again。If there was anything bad, I wish there was more character architecture for Kirin and Namgi。
Ifrah,
The pacing of this was a bit slow in the beginning but it picked up about half-way through the book。 This is an empowering re-telling of this story and the world-building pays tribute to classic Korean folklore and mythology。 The Sea God’s Bride is popularly depicted in manga, anime, dramas, movies, paintings, and novels。 Usually, she is portrayed as passive and a victim, but this book shows her as an assertive, willful character in charge of her own fate。

Maria,
It's simple and sweet for what it is but it lacks enough visual world building to really put you there and the characters lack substance, especially the heroine。 It's simple and sweet for what it is but it lacks enough visual world building to really put you there and the characters lack substance, especially the heroine。 。。。more

Iman Ghazi,
I never imagined that a novel would break me and also mend me in the manner that this one had。 I really could not wait to read the enchanting story of spirits, gods/goddesses, dragons, and other mythical entities。 This was fantasy at its finest。It took some time to adjust to the narrative, but very quickly, things began to set into their rightful places。 I found early on that Mina is undeniably the epitome of strength and honour。 A truly noble and respectable young woman。。。 And wise as well。 She I never imagined that a novel would break me and also mend me in the manner that this one had。 I really could not wait to read the enchanting story of spirits, gods/goddesses, dragons, and other mythical entities。 This was fantasy at its finest。It took some time to adjust to the narrative, but very quickly, things began to set into their rightful places。 I found early on that Mina is undeniably the epitome of strength and honour。 A truly noble and respectable young woman。。。 And wise as well。 She understood her purpose and the place of those around her。 She understood the value of sacrifice。 For these reasons, it felt relieving to know that so many were willing to sacrifice themselves in turn for her。 From Namgi, Kirin, and Shin to her very loving ancestors, all were willing to stand around her in an effort to protect her from a cruel fate。 Though, Mina never viewed her fate as cruel。 She learned quickly that just as she could mould her fate to match what was expected of her, she could mould it to become her own happiness。。。 And not at the cost of those around her。Axie's incredible writing surrounded me with unimaginable warmth。 The unexplainable feeling of falling in love with something you once could not fully comprehend had somehow been put to the best of words。 Unconditional love, duty, loyalty。。。 All of which encompasses the family Mina had found along her journey。Just as she had wished, everything was right in the end。 All were where they were meant to be。It was without a doubt, the perfect happy ending。 。。。more

Narrated by sixteen year old Ina, Oh’s fantasy draws upon Korean folklore。A rich and beautiful story。Some of the elements reminded me of: Spirited Away
Aminah,
i liked this :)
Meihan,
It was decent in first half but then kind of left me wanting a bit more near the later half。
Carri,
Magical, heartwarming, adventurous and lovely。 Everything a fairytale should have, including a curse, a dragon and a happily ever after。
Kaitlin,
The story is simple and sweet, and that’s not a knock against it。 I’d say this is a “high” three star rating。 Meaning, I liked it overall but would only casually recommend it。
kasia,

Reader of Books,
Full of whimsy, myth, and stories of gods and magic, this sounded right up my alley。 Unfortunately, it felt just a touch。。。 not for me and I can't place why。 I'm definitely going to need to reread this later when I'm in the mood for something whimsical。 It's beautiful writing, fast paced, and I empathize with Mina。 She's such a great character and I adore books with magpies in them, especially in relation to curses and magic。 This is a solid 4 ⭐ read, but it felt there was something missing。 I r Full of whimsy, myth, and stories of gods and magic, this sounded right up my alley。 Unfortunately, it felt just a touch。。。 not for me and I can't place why。 I'm definitely going to need to reread this later when I'm in the mood for something whimsical。 It's beautiful writing, fast paced, and I empathize with Mina。 She's such a great character and I adore books with magpies in them, especially in relation to curses and magic。 This is a solid 4 ⭐ read, but it felt there was something missing。 I recommend this for those who love ancient myths and magic。 。。。more

Tiffany,
I don’t think this book did anything revolutionary or fresh in the YA world, but as I don’t read a ton of YA, I really enjoyed it 😜 I liked the main character and her devotion to her family。 I liked the folklore and mythology sprinkled throughout。 I loved the “twists” (one of them actually choked me up a bit … in a good way)。 Overall, this was just a fun book that felt wholly marketable to younger and older teens alike (which is not something I can say for a good chunk of YA … a lot of it feels I don’t think this book did anything revolutionary or fresh in the YA world, but as I don’t read a ton of YA, I really enjoyed it 😜 I liked the main character and her devotion to her family。 I liked the folklore and mythology sprinkled throughout。 I loved the “twists” (one of them actually choked me up a bit … in a good way)。 Overall, this was just a fun book that felt wholly marketable to younger and older teens alike (which is not something I can say for a good chunk of YA … a lot of it feels meant for adults)。 。。。more

nat,
2。5I felt like the strongest point of this book was supposed to be in its setting, because honestly the characters and plot were not very strong, and if you take the elements of this book and transplant it into a different typical YA setting it would be the absolute definition of generic。 However, even with the “unique” setting it still sucked。 I saw a lot of people compare this book to spirited away, but it’s like if someone took the plain aesthetics of spirited away but took away the heart tha 2。5I felt like the strongest point of this book was supposed to be in its setting, because honestly the characters and plot were not very strong, and if you take the elements of this book and transplant it into a different typical YA setting it would be the absolute definition of generic。 However, even with the “unique” setting it still sucked。 I saw a lot of people compare this book to spirited away, but it’s like if someone took the plain aesthetics of spirited away but took away the heart that makes the movie what it is。 If you want a book that deals with the spirit world but has a setting that feels truly lived in, I would just recommend The Ghost Bride。 Side note: a pet peeve of mine is trying to make characters sound really profound but not being able to work it into the dialogue properly so it just feels like mid-dialogue they pull out a book of parables to quote from。 Mina was the absolute worst offender of this。 。。。more

4。5 I'm still not totally sure what it was missing for me but personally I didn't feel as if it was a 5 star read to me you know? It still is very good and that's why I rounded up to a 5 on GR instead of rounding down because it does deserve the great rating but idk I been sitting on it a few days and cannot figure out what I wanted more of or less of or what was missing 😅 The writing。 This is definitely Axie Ohs best book (that I've read so far)。 The style is easy to get into, it's beautiful an 4。5 I'm still not totally sure what it was missing for me but personally I didn't feel as if it was a 5 star read to me you know?
